Day 5 - Arrowtown (19th C. Gold Mining town)
Wednesday, July 8
View from our room in Queenstown this morning.
We slept in this morning with no agenda but to make our way north to the town of Wanaka by evening. We found a coffee shop / breakfast place on the way out of town with Arrowtown as our destination. We read about a little museum there depicting the history of the late 19th century West Coast gold rush on the South Island, and since Gail had read an 800 page novel set in just this time and place (The Luminaries) in preparation for our trip here, it was the perfect thing to do on this rainy day.
Arrowtown attracts tourists as it has retained its simple Main Street facades from gold rush days, and filled them with lovely shops, galleries, and quaint restaurants. (We may have done some shopping….!)
The Arrowtown Museum depicting life in the late 1800’s on the west coast of the South Island centered around the gold rush.
